Denzel Dumfries is set to start at right-back for Real Madrid at Racing Santander today, and he could not have asked for better timing.
Federico Valverde, Mourinho’s choice in the position in recent weeks, has been left out of the squad with muscular discomfort. Diario AS, via Madrid Universal, reports that Dumfries will get the nod ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold at El Sardinero.
Why this Dumfries right-back start matters
Valverde is a midfielder, and even Mourinho has admitted the arrangement troubles him. “Playing Fede as a right-back is something that pains me,” he said after the 4-1 win over RB Leipzig, according to Goal, because it meant benching two natural full-backs.
Dumfries is one of them. Real Madrid paid Inter €20m for him in the summer to fill this exact role, yet he has mostly been a substitute lately. He came off the bench in the second half at Camp Nou last Sunday, when Kylian Mbappé’s late winner sealed a 2-1 Clásico victory.
An audition for both right-backs
A convincing display today would make it awkward for Mourinho to move Valverde back into defence once he is fit. Alexander-Arnold is also waiting for his chance. Madrid Universal suggests he could start against AEK Athens or Valencia next week if he impresses off the bench.
Mourinho insists neither player has complained. According to reports in Spain, he said both accepted that the Valverde switch was for the good of the team.
Real Madrid’s stretched squad
The rotation is partly forced. Mourinho has criticised La Liga for giving Real Madrid three games and three trips in seven days, and his options are already thin. Vinícius Júnior is still suspended, while Rodrygo, Ferland Mendy and Raúl Asencio are all out.
Last Sunday’s Clásico win left Real Madrid three points behind leaders Barcelona. For Dumfries, the stakes are more personal: if he plays well, the debate over who should play right-back for Real Madrid may finally be settled.
